Advertisers: Integration / Target Audience

The Target Audience page of each campaign allows you to define who will see your ad. The options available depend on the campaign type. Options include specifying demographics, uploading lists of user ids, integrating with our backend api, or using our frontend widgets (such as the opt-in widget for App Endorsement campaigns).

Q: If I am acting both as an advertiser and as a publisher displaying ads on my site, will I end up displaying my own ads?
A: No. Your ads will not show up on any of your publisher sites.

Q: Can I target my app promotion by demographics?
A: Yes, since you embed the user's social graph into our widget, you can filter it beforehand to limit it to the desired demographic. If you want to promote your app only to male friends, because that is your target demographic, that is easy to do.

Q: What is the format for recipient lists that are uploaded?
A: They should be text files with a single user id on each line in quotes. Optionally a comma may follow this followed by the text substitutions in quotes. For example a line might look like: "1234","Bob,10,SOMA"

Q: How do I pass/use text substitutions?
A: They should be comma seperated. They may not contain quotes. For example Bob,10,SOMA would result in macro #SUB1# being replaced with Bob, #SUB2# being replaced with 10, #SUB3# being replaced with SOMA. Remember only to substitute in information that belongs to you (social platforms prohibit the caching of user data acquired through the API).

Q: What if I send the same campaign/ad to the same person twice?
A: The "Recipients from Lists" and "Recipients from API" statistics will double count that entry. However in most cases if the ad is suppose to be seen by that person only 5 times, it will still only be seen a maximum of 5 times. The only exception is if that ad had already been seen 5 times by the person before the person was re-entered. In that case the person will see the ad another 5 times.
